Khmer Swipe Keyboard: a free Khmer keyboard for iPhone, iPad and Android
Khmer Swipe Keyboard is a free Khmer and English keyboard I made for fast everyday typing. Every Khmer letter, vowel and sign is one tap or one flick away, and it suggests words as you type. It's on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on Google Play for Android.
Get it#
- iPhone and iPad: Khmer Swipe Keyboard on the App Store (iOS 17 or later)
- Android: Khmer Swipe Keyboard on Google Play (Android 8 or later, phones and tablets)
Both are free, with no ads and no account.
Flick to type#
- Tap a key for its letter, and flick it for the other letters it holds, so there's no shift key and no waiting.
- Word suggestions finish the word you're typing and fix common spelling slips.
- Next-word guesses offer the word that usually comes next, and learn the words you use most, on your phone only.
- Swipe the space bar to switch between Khmer and English. English has its own suggestions, with a capital letter at the start of a sentence.
On iPhone and iPad, tap space once after a Khmer word for an invisible word break, or twice for a normal space. The Khmer full stop adds the space after it for you.
On Android you can flick a key in four directions, swipe far left on any key to delete, and hold the space bar and slide to move the cursor. There's also a full emoji page you can search in English or Khmer. A word the keyboard doesn't know shows in red: tap it to keep it.
Make it yours#
- 12 colour themes
- 4 Khmer key fonts: the phone's own font, Kantumruy Pro, Battambang and Siemreap
- Two key styles, and 4 or 5 rows of keys
- Separate text sizes for Khmer and English, for the keys and for the word bar
Hold the … key to change all of this without leaving the keyboard.
Private by design#
- No internet: nothing you type can leave your phone.
- No ads, no account, no tracking and no data collected.
- On iPhone and iPad it never reads your clipboard. Allow Full Access is optional, and is only used for key sounds, vibration, sharing your settings with the app and remembering your words on your device.
- On Android, nothing is suggested or learned in password boxes and private browser tabs.
The full privacy policy and the support page are online.
Where the Khmer words come from#
The suggestions are built from open Khmer word lists and texts, including Google's Khmer language resources, Tatoeba sentences and Khmer Wikipedia. A word is only kept if Samdech Chuon Nath's dictionary has it or real text uses it at least three times. The iPhone and Android versions share the same Khmer suggestions, checked against the same 238 typed examples.
